Eternity For Men

Eternity For Men: loved by your average fragrance consumer, reviled by most perfume enthusiasts.  There's a whole group of fragrances that perfume snobs love to trash: Cool Water, Acqua di Gio, Brut, CKOne, and on and on.  They tend to be the scents that are really popular, and I have to believe that a lot (not all) of the bashing is simply due to the fact that these fragrances are mainstream.  Eternity For Men is a member of that club.  That's too bad, because it's a great fragrance.

Eternity is a sporty fougere in the Nineties style, meaning that it's a lavender fragrance with a watery smell in the background.  On top of the lavender is a sharp sweetness (which comes from mandarin orange) that gives the fragrance the sensation of a cool breeze on water.  Notes of basil and jasmine add complexity and a welcome green herbal tinge to the scent.

Along with Davidoff's Cool Water, Eternity For Men spawned a whole genre of awful so-called "aquatic fragrances" in the 1990s, but it was always far better than those.  Like the aquatics, Eternity does smell largely synthetic, but unlike them, the synthetics in Eternity blend very well with the natural ingredients, and smell like they belong in the fragrance.  Eternity For Men would smell flaccid and weak without synthetic ingredients to give the scent some backbone.  Just because a fragrance contains some synthetic materials, it doesn't mean it has to smell like a barrel of chemicals.  The job of a great perfumer is to make sure that doesn't happen, and the perfumer who created Eternity For Men succeeded in doing that.

I think the key to wearing this fragrance with panache is all in the application.  You don't want to overspray this, or else you will smell like chemicals.  Granted, Eternity still does have a certain pretty boy flash to it, and some will consider it too 90's in style, and outdated.  However, if you don't bathe in it, and merely apply it conservatively, Eternity For Men can be a very classy and attractive scent for a guy of any age.  You don't have to be a college party animal to wear Eternity For Men.  Just be careful with the doseage.
