If you love the smell of L’Homme, but just wish it were stronger, this is for you. Open Black is L’Homme with its ballsack hanging out.
If you want to know what this smells like, just read my review of Roger & Gallet’s L’Homme, below. It is a carbon copy of L’Homme to my nose, only much stronger. Unlike L’Homme, Open Black most certainly is a powerhouse. I said before that L’Homme would go perfectly with a tuxedo or a suit. Open Black, on the other hand, is primarily a hairy chest and gold chains frag. No androgyny here.
All joking aside, this is great news for those of you who can’t track down a bottle of L’Homme for under $75 US. Amazingly, Open Black right now sells for about $13 US for a 100 ml. bottle, which is a steal. One spray of this will give you the same classy effect that L’Homme exudes. Five or six sprays will give you pounding sillage.
I can’t end this review without comparing it to Roger & Gallet’s original Open, which was an 80s scent that I reviewed here a few years ago. Open Black has the same level of testosterone as Open, but is more leathery and dense. Open’s main focus was a super dry tobacco note in the drydown, whereas Open Black is more of a heavy aromatic fougere. The two fragrances are quite different, and therefore it’s worth owning both.
I gave L’Homme a perfect score, but I’m going to give Open Black a 9 out of 10 because I personally prefer the subtlety of L’Homme. Open Black is a freakin awesome frag, though.
MY RATING: 9/10
